His creator Walt Disney first introduced Mickey Mouse to the public in 1927. Using all of my fingers and toes to calculate, it's been almost a hundred years (92 years ago to be exact) since Mickey first made his debut and he's been thrilling audiences old and young since then. I grew up in the days of the original Mouseketeers and totally enjoy all of Mickey's cartoon exploits. His creator Walt Disney was actually the voice of Mickey Mouse in Mickey's early cartoon days.
It would be hard for most of us living today to realize what a Steven Spielberg moment the Walt Disney's Steamboat Willie cartoon character played by the Mickey Mouse cartoon character had on people's minds back in the 1920s. Imagine going to the theater back in the 1920s BC (Before Cable) and this cartoon comes on the big screen. You are used to enjoying the silent films and cartoons of the day when suddenly music synchronized to the Steamboat Willie cartoon can be hard and the Steamboat Willie cartoon character play by Mickey Mouse cartoon character whistles along with the upbeat music jam. 1920 minds were blown away by the technology.
And wouldn't be that blown away by moviegoers technology again until the 1930s when Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz would go from a black&white picture on the screen to live blazing color once her house lands in Oz. These are the kinds of technologies (picture and sound) we take for granted today. The amazing thing to me is that Mickey Mouse has survived all of the technology changes over the years and while his wardrobe hasn't changed all that much, the visual quality of this lovable character has improved, as you can see below.
